Today, more and more boaters are bringing their pets on board for a day on the water. Boat captains need to stop and think about a few simple steps that will ensure they and their pets have a fun, safe boating experience.
While on the boat, make sure your dog is under constant supervision, especially while the boat is moving. If your puppy or dog is a newcomer to the boat and to the water, take things slowly initially, to allow your pet to adjust.
Dangers for pets lurk in the ocean, lakes and even your pool so here are some things you can do to maintain safety.
Pet Safety for boating, swimming pool, beach or lake:
- Personal (Pet) Flotation Device
- Current ID tag and harness with leash
- Take things slow if it's your pets' first time on the boat. Let your pet adjust to the movement of the boat and the sound of the engine
- Provide better footing with rubber-soled dog booties
- Boat deck and ground temperature can get quite hot on your pet's paws so use some disposable dog booties
- Bring plenty of fresh water for your pet to drink with a travel bowl
- Rinse your pets fur off after being in water to help to prevent hot spots
- Pets can get heat stroke too, so have some shade for them to rest in
- Never leave pets alone in or near the pool
- Know pet CPR and pet First Aid
- Actively supervise pets at all times near water
- Remove all toys from the water after use so pets aren't tempted to jump in after them when you're not around
- Even if a dog is a good swimmer it can be spooked and panic.
- Use fencing around the pool or a water alarm.
